A shower head has no fixed expiry date. Replace it if the spray stays uneven after descaling, if it leaks from the handle or if it is cracked. An old head usually goes in general waste or to the recycling centre.
Try this first
Many problems can be solved without a new shower head:
- Weak or uneven spray? Descale the head. See descaling a shower head.
- Leaking at the connection? Often only the sealing ring is worn. See shower head or shower hose leaking.
- Shower head with filter and a weak spray? The filter may be full. See replacing a shower filter.
5 signs your shower head is really worn out
- The spray stays uneven, even after you've descaled it properly.
- It leaks from the handle or a seam. Then the head itself is leaking.
- It has cracks, or parts are loose.
- The modes turn stiffly or not at all.
- It uses a lot of water. If the bucket test shows more than 10 litres per minute, a more efficient head will make a big difference to your energy bill.
How long does a shower head last?
There is no fixed period. It depends on how hard your water is, how often you descale and what the head is made of. Besjaar shower heads come with a 12-month warranty, on top of your statutory rights.
What do you do with your old shower head?
A shower head is not packaging, so it does not belong in plastic packaging recycling (PMD in the Netherlands). Check your municipality's waste guide. At the Dutch waste company Waardlanden, for example, hard plastics go in general waste or to the recycling centre.
- Plastic shower head: general waste, or hard plastics at the recycling centre.
- Metal shower head or hose: recycling centre, with scrap and metals.
- Used filter cartridges: these are made of different materials. When in doubt, it goes in general waste.
Do you live in a rented home? Then keep your old shower head so you can put it back when you move out. Read replacing a shower head in a rented home.
Choosing a new head
If you're replacing your shower head, check your hose too. If it's stiff or leaking, get a set with a hose. See choosing a shower hose and which Besjaar shower head suits you? Fitting takes 5 minutes: see replacing a shower head in 5 minutes.
Frequently asked questions

No. Plastic packaging recycling is only for packaging. A plastic shower head goes in general waste or to the recycling centre.
Do I need to replace my shower hose too?
Only if it leaks, kinks or has become stiff. A good hose can stay.
